We've put in a performance-test environment at $work, using Devel::NYTProf. Turns out that the number one timesink in the modules examined so far is Time::HiRes::sleep(). I have no joke here.

Looking at code I wrote in 2008. I have changes I want live soon. I also want to port the whole thing to a new architecture. I can't toss the thing and redo in Dancer/Rails/whatever. Trying to think of the right way to do everything. Can't even recall how I set certain things up.

When I teach driving, I start in a big parking lot with nothing in it and let the student drive in big circles until he or she feels comfortable. That big parking lot is traditionally Ross-Ade parking lot. I took Eric (pictured) to Ross Ade the second time yesterday, and it started to rain down hard on us. Yes, it was a hard rain and thus tough, but OTOH, it kept traffic down, which made it easier when Eric mentioned he was bored with parking and comfortable with the car. So, I took him away from the stadium, out on Cherry, down to the airport, through Married Student Housing, by Ag Mall, up and down a parking structure, past Chauncey and Five Points, down Earl, and back home.

He needs work in knowing where to be in the lane, but really, he did well for his first time on the streets.

Let's reverse that last one, get the lede above the fold. Anyone have a favorite in-memory NoSQL DB to run on a Raspberry Pi? Any particular reason why Redis would not be a good answer?

Had a good talk over lunch with +Randy Herban . He is automating the heck out of his house with Jeenodes and Raspberry Pi. Right now, he's writing current status to a text file, and this means repeated rewrites on an SD card, which is the death of SD cards.

My thought was "Redis!" It runs in memory and he isn't taxing his system too much, so that should be better than status files. But I've seen comment that the memory footprint was enough to make it less of a go on Raspberry Pi. Certainly there's nothing to it that couldn't be done with MongoDB or some other NoSQL thing. Can anyone here talk intelligently on in-memory data stores and Pi?

There was a recent Microsoft App Camp here, and I bought Windows 8 in order to try to build an app.

About the fourth time I tried to open the Windows Phone 8 SDK after installing the Windows Phone 8 SDK, only to be told to install the Windows Phone 8 SDK, I gave up on the VirtualBox installation, deleted it, and tried to put it on a desktop PC I have. Now, it seems that I burned my installation key on the failed virtual installation I used it on.

So, I spent my money on Windows 8 only to never get a useable Windows 8 system.

"Court documents say investigators found Shirasaki had been installing key-logging devices in various keyboards in classrooms and professors’ offices in order to get keystroke data from the user. Investigators say Shirasaki would pick professors’ office doors when locked, and through searches, several keyboards were found on campus that had been tampered with."

I've been wrestling with this idea for a while. When we automate everything, what do people do?

On the other hand, the easily-automated jobs treat people like machines and are miserable A's worth keeping people out of.
