I decided to track my caffeine intake, and because I wanted to do something with dates in the output that SQL didn't want to do, I created a table full of dates. Tables are finite because admins want to go home, so I added so far into the future and thought that should be enough.

Turns out, end of 2014 was the point where I let time end, and my coffee graph has been showing 2012-2014 for several months. D'oh!

I'm so much liking this.

Reminded again of this video, where Funkscribe breaks "Superstition" into constituent tracks to show how Stevie Wonder is so funky. Deserves FAR more than 300 views.

Upgraded to Arduino 1.6.1 and lost a lot of my hardware support.

The bigger guys (sparkfun, adafruit, etc.) have released updates.

It took me a while to find this, if you have to fix stuff yourself:

I'm cancelling Arduino Day for us. I just can't get it together enough this week to make it work. It seemed like a fun idea, but no, not going to happen.

The goal is to write code that interfaces with Bluetooth Low Energy in Ubuntu through VirtualBox, as Windows 7 cannot handle BLE.

This is simply doing normal Bluetooth scanning, not BLE, but it is using the dongle with the guest OS. So, win!

At a CS colloquium. Topic is slightly beyond my understanding, but I think it's about using SSDs as memory replicated across nodes in large computing systems. More systems and architecture than CS, to my mind, as there have been no equations, but interesting.

For example, we're wanting nodes with a quarter TB of RAM for genomics usage. The bigger win is when applications on both node A and node B need to read and write to the same memory location. Look up "Mojim".

BLE, in case you care

These nRF8001 Bluetooth Low Energy boards are from Adafruit , When I got them, a friend soldered on the header pins, and one didn't work. I started a long conversation with Adafruit — it's not conductive to debugging when you can only do it one evening ever...

We're considering having an Arduino Day event in town. A bit of show-and-tell, a presentation on what Arduino is, and a bit of how to program one. Matt says "If there's cake, I'm there", so we might come up with a cake, one that's frosted blue like an Arduino.

Any interest?
